A friend of mine recently shared a mile marker in her life – after having spent over a decade journaling daily about things she is grateful for, she had just reached her 14,000th entry! Truly quite a remarkable accomplishment. Studies have shown consistent thoughts, such as those centered on gratitude, can actually re-wire your brain by re-shaping its neuroplasticity, as in you can create new neural pathways which support that new thinking pattern – pretty amazing! One you start to train your brain to look for things to be grateful for, you automatically start to think that way over time and in doing so enhance your well-being. You can’t hold two conflicting emotions at once – if you are angry, you are angry, or if you are sad, then you are sad. If you choose to be grateful, you can’t also feel upset, or like you’re not enough, or like life has dealt you the wrong cards. Gratitude can change everything in your life! A simple thank you can go such a long way, even if it’s to yourself for doing the best you can given what you are going through. Give yourself a pat on the back and take a moment to reflect on all that you have done in your life for which to be grateful. And then take a moment to see how others in your life have also done so much to help you on your path – and give them a warm thank you as well! We are all in this together – as Ram Dass once said, “We are all walking each other home.” We are all here to assist, support, and guide each other back to where we came from. Realizing this and recognizing all of the beauty around you, or the small moments that bring you joy, or the people who go above and beyond to support you, can bring immense thankfulness to your heart and in turn shape the way you think about yourself, others and the world.
Say thank- you.
Peace,
Kim
